Rolling Waves (荒波) Taffy is a design packaging exercise that calls for a physically successful form inspired by a movie. The movie I was inspired by is Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo, and the animation style is one that I wanted to pay homage to. With colorful patterns and expressive type, the taffy felt like the right candy to design this idea around.
Inspired by this container design and exerpt from the Letterform Archive ...engaging modernist and avant-garde trends from abroad, refashioning local graphic and calligraphic forms, and using the latest tools and techniques, they [Japanese designers] poured fresh colors and expressive forms into all facets of consumer life, from streetscapes to the printed page.
